Should a 12 year old have a smartwatch?

A simple smartwatch with only GPS and calling features may help parents ease into independence. Older kids can handle more responsibility — but still need parental rules for screen use. At this stage, many parents consider shifting to a phone instead of just a watch. When it comes to first phones for children, parents often wonder what age is right. Unfortunately, there is no accurate answer to this question because all children are different. One child may be ready for the responsibility of owning a phone at 10, while another might not be ready until age 13 or beyond. In another survey of 765 teens and young adults, participants recommended that children receive their first phone between 12 and 13 years of age, when it becomes a necessity for independence from parents. Many experts suggest waiting to give your kids a smart phone until they are at least 13 years old or in 8th grade.
